One of the most important milestones in a child’s dental development is around age seven. Even if your child’s teeth look straight, this is the ideal time for an orthodontic evaluation with Dr. Rambo.
Why Age 7?
By age seven, most children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth. This allows us to identify how the teeth and jaws are developing and catch potential issues early, often before they become more complex. Early monitoring doesn’t always mean early treatment, but it gives us the opportunity to guide growth and ensure everything is progressing as it should.
What Is Phase 1 Treatment?
Phase 1 treatment, also known as early interceptive treatment, typically occurs between ages 7–10. The goal is not to straighten every tooth, but to address significant concerns early, such as:
- Severe crowding or spacing issues
- Crossbites or underbites
- Jaw growth discrepancies
- Harmful oral habits (like thumb sucking)
- Airway concerns, including mouth breathing, snoring, or restricted airflow
Addressing airway concerns early can play an important role in a child’s overall health and development. Proper jaw growth and alignment can help support better breathing, improved sleep quality, and overall wellness. In addition, proper jaw growth and alignment support healthy chewing and eating function while also helping reduce the risk of speech related issues.
By treating these issues early, we can often simplify or shorten future treatment and help create space for permanent teeth to come in properly.
The Monitoring Phase
Not every child needs Phase 1 treatment and that’s perfectly okay! At Rambo Orthodontics, many patients enter a complimentary growth and development monitoring program after their initial evaluation. During this time, Dr. Rambo keeps a close eye on how the teeth and jaws are developing, recommending the ideal time to begin treatment if needed.
What Is Phase 2 Treatment?
Phase 2 treatment usually begins once most or all permanent teeth have erupted, typically between ages 11–14. This is when we focus on aligning the teeth, perfecting the bite, and creating a healthy, confident smile. Phase 2 often involves braces or clear aligners.

Even if your child doesn’t need treatment right away, early evaluations allow us to:
- Detect problems before they worsen
- Plan for the most efficient treatment timeline
- Potentially avoid more invasive procedures later
